They share a lift system, a lift pass and a mountain. One costs thirty to fifty percent more than the other. That single fact is the whole of this comparison, and everything below is about whether the premium is worth paying in your case, because sometimes it plainly is.
The skiing is the same. Genuinely.
This is worth stating plainly because a great deal of marketing implies otherwise. Meribel and Courchevel sit on the same linked domain, covered by the same pass, with the same 600 km of pistes reachable from either. Nobody is buying better skiing by choosing one over the other.
Two honest nuances. Meribel is the central valley, so crossing the full Three Valleys and returning in a day is quicker from there. Courchevel has slightly more north-facing terrain on the Saulire side, which holds snow marginally better in spring. For most parties, these are minutes and margins.
What Courchevel 1850 actually buys
Not skiing: an address, and what surrounds it. The greatest concentration of palaces and starred tables in the Alps. Boutiques that exist in three cities in the world and here. An altiport directly above the resort, which no other French station offers. And a name that means something specific to a certain clientele, independently of anything on the mountain.
These are real goods, and for the party whose week is built around evenings rather than mornings, they are the whole point. Nobody choosing 1850 is confused about what they are paying for.

What Meribel buys
Position, first: the middle valley, the fastest access to the other two, and the shortest route to skiing the whole domain rather than one end of it.
Then character. The 1938 architectural charter forbidding exposed concrete is the reason Meribel reads as a wood-and-slate valley rather than a resort. It is quieter in the evening, which some parties want and others do not.
And then the arithmetic. At the same standard, the same bedroom count and the same week, Meribel costs a third to a half less. On a €70,000 New Year budget that is not a small saving. It is a materially better chalet.

Courchevel is four resorts, and that changes everything
The comparison people make is Meribel against Courchevel 1850. But Courchevel is four villages: 1850, Moriond at 1650, Village at 1550 and Le Praz at 1300. All four sit on the same domain with the same access.
Moriond has the sunniest aspect in the resort. Village is minutes from 1850 by gondola at a considerably lower price. Le Praz is the original Savoyard village, with farms and Olympic ski jumps, and the most affordable of the four. If Courchevel is the requirement but the 1850 premium is not, these levels are where the answer usually sits, and it is where Chalet Crystal, at 830 m² across six floors, happens to be.
- The evenings matter most — Courchevel 1850. Nothing in France compares for tables, rooms and late hours.
- The skiing matters most — Meribel. Central, fastest across the domain, better value at equal standard.
- You want the largest possible chalet for the budget — Meribel, or the lower Courchevel levels.
- You are arriving by private aircraft — Courchevel, for the altiport.
- Children, multiple families — Meribel, or Courchevel Village and Moriond. Ask about bunk rooms before choosing the resort.
- Late-season or Easter — favour altitude over address: Mottaret and the Saulire side over the low villages.
A note on how we would put it
If the criterion is genuinely the Three Valleys (the skiing, the domain, the week on the mountain), Meribel is where the money works hardest, and we say so even though we hold inventory in both.
If the criterion is Courchevel 1850 specifically, that is a legitimate criterion and the premium is simply the price of the address. What we would not do is let someone pay the 1850 premium believing they are buying better skiing, because they are not.
Whichever you choose, the calendar decides first
Both resorts settle their festive weeks between late August and October, and 1850 settles earliest of all, much of it never reaching the open market. February half-term follows from October to December.
