The constraint on a festive week in the Alps is not budget. It is the calendar. There are a fixed number of chalets at this standard in Meribel and Courchevel, one Christmas, one New Year, and a booking window that opens in late summer and closes long before the snow does. Here is how that window actually behaves.
The three windows
The Alpine season does not book evenly. It books in three distinct waves, each attached to a school calendar somewhere in Europe.
- Christmas and New Year (19 December – 2 January) — settled between late August and October.
- February half-term (13 – 27 February) — settled between October and December.
- Easter — the one peak week that can still be taken late.
- January and late March — never contested. Bookable almost until departure, and the best value of the season.
If you are reading this in September with festive dates in mind, you are in the right month. If you are reading it in November, the honest answer is that the conversation has changed shape, and the last section addresses that.
Why the supply does not stretch
A chalet of six or seven bedrooms with a chef, a host and daily housekeeping is not a category that expands with demand. The Three Valleys has a finite number of them, they let whole and weekly, and Saturday-to-Saturday changeovers mean one party per week and no overlap.
So the festive fortnight is, in practice, two units of inventory per chalet. Not two hundred rooms: two weeks. That is the entire reason the pricing behaves the way it does, and the entire reason September matters more than money.
New Year goes first
Of the two festive weeks, New Year is the more contested by a clear margin, and it commits earliest, frequently before the summer is over. Groups that take New Year tend to be repeat parties who reserve the same chalet year on year, which removes properties from the open market before it opens.
Christmas holds a little longer. The week running to the 24th is the softest of the festive period: families with young children often prefer it, but the corporate and multi-generational groups that drive the top of the market are mostly aiming at the turn of the year. If your dates have any give, Christmas is the easier of the two to place well.
Month by month, what is actually left
Late August to September. Full choice. Every chalet that will be available this season is available now, and this is the only point at which resort, size and piste access can all be optimised at once.
October. Still a real market. The very best properties in Courchevel 1850 have gone; Meribel holds up well, and this is where flexibility on resort starts to pay.
November. The remainders. What is available was passed over twice, and the price does not always acknowledge it. Bookable, but the leverage has moved.
December. Late releases and cancellations only. Occasionally excellent: a cancelled New Year in a first-rate chalet does happen, but it is a matter of luck rather than planning, and it requires being able to say yes within hours.

Settle the dates before the chalet
The instinct is to fall for a property and then work out the week. In a market this tight it wastes the summer. Two things eliminate most of the inventory immediately, and both are yours to fix: the exact dates, and the number of people sleeping.
Resort comes third, and it is the variable worth holding loosely. Meribel and Courchevel share a lift system; at genuinely equivalent standard, Meribel sits a third to a half below Courchevel 1850. If you are already late
Late is not the same as impossible, but it changes the method. What works in November and December is holding two or three date options rather than one, staying open on resort, and being able to decide quickly when something is released. Cancellations at this level tend to surface with days of notice, not weeks, and they go to whoever is ready.
What does not work is waiting for the price to fall. Festive rates do not soften as the date approaches. Scarcity moves the other way.
